Man Charged with Murder After Death of Aboriginal Child in Australia

(MENAFN) Police in Australia have charged a man with the murder of a five-year-old Aboriginal girl whose disappearance ended in a tragic discovery, according to reports citing law enforcement statements.

As stated by reports, officers in the Northern Territory arrested a 47-year-old man in Alice Springs on Thursday evening in connection with the death of a child identified culturally as Kumanjayi Little Baby.

Authorities said the suspect has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday through an audio-visual link.

According to general accounts, the girl went missing from a town camp in Alice Springs on April 25, triggering a major search operation. Her body was later discovered approximately 5 kilometers from the camp on April 30.

Reports also indicate that the man faces additional charges, including sexual assault allegations.

As stated by police, several other individuals were detained following unrest in the area, with five people arrested for what was described as riot-related behavior after tensions escalated outside Alice Springs Hospital following the suspect’s arrest.

Authorities further noted that additional suspects have been identified, and more arrests are expected in the coming days as investigations continue.
