Calls Mount to Block Israeli President Herzog’s Visit to Australia
Senator David Shoebridge of the Greens Party said his party tabled the motion in the Senate, asking Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to cancel Herzog’s upcoming visit. “Herzog has ‘literally signed bombs used in the genocide in Gaza. Labor, the Liberals and One Nation joined together to vote it down,’” Shoebridge said, referring to his experience in parliament, adding, “That tells you everything.”
Herzog is scheduled to arrive in Sydney on February 8 for a four-day visit.
Ahead of his trip, a coalition of civil society organizations filed a legal complaint seeking to block Herzog’s visa and requesting a criminal investigation under Australian law. The submission was made to the attorney general, the home affairs minister, and the federal police by the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), the Jewish Council of Australia, and the Hind Rajab Foundation, according to reports.
Prominent Australian justice advocates have also urged federal authorities to investigate Herzog for incitement to genocide before his visit. The Australian Centre for International Justice, alongside Palestinian advocacy groups such as Al Haq and the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, argued in a formal request that allowing Herzog to enter the country while facing such allegations would be unacceptable.
Herzog’s invitation by Prime Minister Albanese followed the December attack at Bondi Beach, which killed 15 people and left 42 others injured, as stated by reports.
