Australia's Inmate Population Rises
This increase aligns with a trend observed in recent years where every Australian state and territory has either enforced or is in the process of enacting bail law changes, aiming to enforce stricter regulations — particularly affecting juvenile offenders, the broadcaster noted.
Fresh statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have revealed a consistent climb in incarceration numbers over the last three years.
The inmate population rose from 40,330 in March 2022 to a current figure of 46,081.
Unsentenced detainees saw an 8 percent surge in the latest quarter, equating to 1,345 more people. This category now totals 19,119, accounting for 42 percent of all inmates.
The rate of incarceration has increased to 214 per 100,000 adults, with men making up a dominant 92 percent of those behind bars.
The Indigenous population endures the most elevated level of imprisonment, with a rate of 2,559 per 100,000 Indigenous adults, which constitutes 37 percent of the total incarcerated demographic.
Based on data from the World Prison Brief, Australia now places seventh among G20 nations in terms of incarceration rates.
